Elysian Fields - Symphonic Scenes For Brass Band & Percussion (brass band)
SYMPHONIC SCENES FOR BRASS BAND & PERCUSSION "ELYSIAN FIELDS" was commissioned by Dansk Amatør Orkesterforbund (DAO) funded by the Danish Art Foundation, as the set test piece for the Danish Brass Band Championship (Elite Section), held in the beautiful Symphonic Hall in Musikhuset, Aarhus on November 3rd 2023.
…the composer writes…
Initially, according to Greek mythology, only mortals related to the gods and other heroes could be admitted past the river
Styx onto the Elysian Fields. Later, the conception of who could enter was expanded to include those chosen by the gods,
the righteous, the heroic and those who earned their place during life. They would remain at the Elysian Fields after death,
to live a blessed and happy afterlife, and indulge in whatever enjoyment they had enjoyed in life.
“What is a hero?
A comrade, a brother, those who paid the ultimate sacrifice.
those who gave birth, those who fathered,
those who gave their ultimate love.”
“…dedicated to the memory of my mother, who in life earned her place as my hero…”
Jacob Vilhelm Larsen, August 23rd, 2022
PROGRAM NOTES
The music falls into 5 sections:
1. Opening
2. Allegro I
3. Limbo - Dreams & Hope
4. Allegro II
5. Finale; The Divine Intervention
The main theme is presented by flugelhorn & glockenspiel in the 3rd bar. This theme returns numerous times during the composition in different styles, shapes, and variations. The first allegro presents more themes and takes us through the battles and struggles in life. The “limbo” between life and death occurs in bar 187 (cadenzas). The central “Dreams & Hope” takes us onto the Elysian Fields. A misterioso section based on the opening theme leads into the second allegro which is a reprise leading into the finale. Solo Snare Drum position A & B creates a “stereo/panning” effect.
Solo positions A & B for brass soloists appears in parts and score.
The cornets divided into 10 individual parts (5A + 5B) are placed on either side of the band. The conductor will choose the sections.
DURATION, c. 18:00 min.
